Wilshire
Inspiration for this collector’s art-filled condo came from the idea that a California home can be up in the sky—an airy retreat in the sophisticated style of a modern European pied à terre. In reimagining the existing footprint, the primary gesture was one of subtraction, stripping back prior ornamentation in favor of refined simplicity with exceptional proportions, opulent surfaces, and minimalistic details like flush doors, built-ins, and minimal downlighting. Soft, atmospheric washes of color provide a serene backdrop to the art. While the architecture is very linear, the rooms feel tall and floating, punctuated with colorful works and expanded by glass vistas that look over the city all the way to the ocean.
The owner’s modern personal style guided the equilibrium of the interiors. Spaces convey softness and femininity with an au courant confidence—neither too girlish or vintage, nor simply a stark white gallery for her art collection. A selective use of color and materials produces a warm, neutral but luxurious envelope that seems to hover in the clouds—rooms of pale pigments, solid expanses of beautiful stone against delicate, glossy lacquer cabinetry, plush silk wool carpets that buffer sound. Throughout, furniture is carefully curated and uncluttered. Large, sculptural shapes with soft edges add to the cushioned, comfortable elegance of the living room and master bedroom. With a minimum number of objects to fill the eye, the attention goes to the art and beyond, to the views.
